Rejoicing Outside the Lines.

On January 1st, I started a fresh count in my joy journal. On July 4th, I wrote entry #1,000: “I feel joy about all the good memories I have with my children.”

In the morning, I often sit by my window for my daily practice where pictures of my kids are taped. Before I read or write, I stare at those photos, completely filled with gratitude. Over the years, we have lived through high peaks and deep valleys. Yet, whenever unexpected trials bring negative emotions, our good memories always find a way to restore my joy. My children are truly amazing. Looking at them, I know that by the grace of God, my husband and I did something right. I am incredibly proud of them.

As the scripture says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.” While life guarantees moments that will try to bring us down, finding joy in the midst of trouble is a choice.

I was tested on this recently when I heard good news about someone with whom I have unresolved issues. When a friend asked how I felt, I acted nonchalant. I secretly wanted to celebrate their success, but my lingering hurt held me back. My friend gently pointed out something that struck a chord: my unresolved pain was actively blocking me from genuinely experiencing the joy of their accomplishment.

Romans 12:15 says, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.” I realized God was showing me that this command isn't just for healthy relationships; it matters even more when a relationship is broken.

The moment I gave myself permission to truly feel happy for this person, the heavy, negative feelings broke away. I felt completely free. Sometimes, choosing to rejoice with someone even when you aren't on good terms; is the very thing that guards your own heart and allows you to keep enjoying your life.
