Thought of the day#17
“You are doing great…” Those were my husband’s and my response at times when a couple came to us for guidance. I love the look on their faces when they realize we don’t think they are totally messing up.
One time, a couple shared with us later that usually when they meet with someone for guidance, they get in the car to go home, have an argument; but this time they were able to remember that they are doing great and address things in a non-threatening way to each other.
Why do we say, “You are doing great…”? From our perspective, the fact that they reached out for help shows their desire to grow and commitment to a healthier marriage. That is great and needs acknowledgement.
Sometimes we can get so caught up on fixing the problem that we fail to acknowledge the victories that already happened.
Personally, I want to get better at saying it to myself and others who are making an effort to better themselves: “You are doing great.”
“But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness.” Hebrews 3:13 NIV
